When I was asked whether I would be interested in writing a review of The Cotton Bag Company‘s latest design of Tote bag I was apprehensive – how would this fit in with my blog? But then something really important occurred to me. . .
Practically everyone I know has been switching to refillable water bottles and reusable travel mugs of some kind. Plastic straws are now pretty much taboo in bars and restaurants across the county. It’s pretty clear that the South West, and particularly Cornwall, is leading the way to a plastic free future.
Amazingly Penzance officially became the UK’s first plastic free town back in 2017, and since then Newquay and Falmouth have follow suit. Towns, villages, shops, clubs and restaurants can all apply to the local St Agnes based organisation Surfers Against Sewage to have their community or business awarded ‘Plastic Free’ credentials.
The SAS say:
“WE ARE USING PEOPLE POWER AND COMMUNITY ACTION TO TACKLE THE PROBLEM OF AVOIDABLE SINGLE-USE PLASTICS HEAD-ON.”
At the moment they report that they have 393 plastic free communities across the UK and that number is growing. This movement is something to be proud of and something we should be celebrating.
In recent months the government announced a possible hike in the minimum price of plastic bags in shops from 5p to 10p, so surely this is the next mission for all of us to
. . . Break the bag habit!
I gave up using plastic bags as much as possible a couple of years ago and have invested in a number of cotton bags that not only look great but are incredibly practical!
So what does The Cotton Bag Company offer? Gorgeous eco-friendly cotton and canvas bags, which are of course 100% reusable and hardwearing. The Cotton Bag Company are pretty passionate about their bags too.
“Tote bags are completely in fashion right now. People are switching to eco-friendly and environmentally friendly totes not only because they want to make a difference but they also look so good!”
So what do I think of the bag that I received . . .
The Selfie Bag
This innovative bag is pretty unique. The Selfie Bag has been specially designed for all your selfie needs, while still holding on to those important environmentally sound credentials and of course, it is really practical too.
These customised bags are made of 100% raw cotton and come in two different designs: natural with a colourful jazzy pattern and black with an elegant gold design.
The bag not only has plenty of space for your swim gear if you are heading to the beach or your shopping if you are running about town, but also has handy inner pockets specially designed to hold your smart phone and your selfie stick.
I’ve never been much of a selfie girl to be honest but I can definitely see the advantages for a bag perfectly designed to carry the tools of the trade! There is even a nifty reflector to help you get perfect lighting wherever you are! And for the novice, like myself, the bag comes with an exclusive brochure with helpful tips from top celebrities such as Kim Kardashian.
But really I’m not here to sell you the Selfie Bag, this little beauty will sell itself to the Instagram generation but what I am here to promote is the idea that plastic bags have had their day. Tote bags are definitely the way forward!
Every one of us should be thinking about how we can help to keep our beautiful county and our oceans free from unnecessary plastic waste.
Every business, big or small, should be thinking about not only the environmental consequences of plastic bags but also the free advertising they can get from giving their customers a bag that they will love and use again and again.
So . . . LETS DO THIS! LETS KICK THE CARRIER BAG HABIT!
